director’s statement

for several years, isadora and i have wanted to create something beautiful together. rough was the obvious choice for collaboration because it’s a song so many women can identify with. as girls we are presented with this homogenous idea of beauty everywhere we look. why as women should we feel the need to conform to society's vision of femininity within womanhood? rough challenges this, and reveals a glimpse into the unstyled, raw, and unromanticized world of eleven women. women who are depicted exactly as they are: reflective, struggling, strong and beautiful. if you are a person that has ever felt pressured to conform to another’s idea of beauty rough is your story. “what do young girls look up to, could i have the nerve, to be a force of nature, the strength she deserves...”  (rough, isadora lurana)
